Who Should Attend
Any student seeking a part-time or full-time summer job, or a paid or for-credit internship Opportunities for ALL MAJORS!
All are welcome! As job opportunities are college level, the fair is most appropriate for college students. Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend to meet and greet our employers.
Benefits of Attending
What to Bring
Be sure to bring multiple copies of your resume!
Bring your URI Student ID card!
Bring your smile and a good handshake.
If possible, leave your knapsack or large bags at home so you can move through the event easily.
How to Dress
URI Career Services does not enforce a "dress code" for job fairs. However, employers remark on candidates' professional (and, unfortunately, unprofessional attire).
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.
Dress professionally and appropriately to meet employers, as if you were going to an interview.
QuintCareers has extensive tips on attire for men and women. You can also do a mock (practice) interview at Career Services and wear what you intend. Log onto your RhodyNet account to make an appointment.
Avoid: baseball caps, hooded sweatshirts, printed (or any kind of ) t-shirts, torn jeans, sloppy shoes, flip flops, suggestive attire , visible audio devices or phones.
What to Say
You need a quick and organized overview of YOU to present to the recruiter. See the "thirty-second commercial advice" at our Job Fairs Made Simple Handout.
Thank the recruiter for being at the job fair. If not offered, always ask for information concerning follow-up or if you have questions (get a business card if available).
How to Follow-up
Always follow-up with employers. Here are a few ways to follow-up:
If any employer has asked you to complete an online application, do so within a few days. Then email the employer and tell them you have completed the application, thank them for being at the job fair, and ask them about the next step in the process.
If an employer asks you to visit the company website, do so and follow the same path as above.
If the employer asked you to send more information, do so promptly, within a week of the event.
Write a brief thank you note (the employer spent time talking with you and coming to URI!) and send by mail or email directly after the event.
What Your Attitude says about You.
Employers recruiting job candidates at URI are GUESTS of the University. They may judge the ENTIRE University on the basis of a quick meeting with you.
You want that meeting to be positive! Employers respect students with a positive outlook and attitude. Consider everything you learn at a job fair to be helpful and a building block for your future.
You have the opportunity to meet with representatives of over 30 companies/organizations at the job fair. Most students only meet with 1-5 company representatives and overlook the rest. Don't assume anything--take the time to stop at employer tables!
"There's nothing for my major" or "this is useless" reflects inappropriate expectations of a job fair. You never know how a chance meeting with an employer (some of whom are URI alumni), in or out of your major, might lead you to someone who can help in your future! Always use these new contacts as building blocks for your network and learning experiences.
Stop at employer tables, even if you "haven't heard" of the organization. Remember that many new jobs are created in small or medium size firms, and there are many organizations coming to the fair that are new to URI recruiting.
A smile, a thank you, good eye contact, and a firm handshake goes a very long way!
Ask for help.
Career Services staff is available at the event for any questions or concerns you may have during the event!
If you have questions or concerns about the event, please contact the Director, Dr. Bobbi Koppel, at bkoppel@uri.edu.
