Applying to medical, dental, optometry, or podiatry programs requires significant planning, self-assessment, and preparation.
Our goal is to help you apply when your application is at its strongest and when you are best positioned for success.
Preparation and Application Towards Healthcare (PATH) is designed for students and recent alumni preparing to apply to Medical (MD/DO), Dental, Optometry and Podiatry programs.
Through PATH, participants receive:
- Guidance on preparing application materials
- Structured self-reflection and readiness assessment
- Feedback from Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) members
- Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) practice
- A one-on-one mock interview
- A Letter Packet for submission to professional schools
PATH is intended to help applicants understand their strengths, identify opportunities for growth, and develop a realistic application strategy.
Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC)
The Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) is a group of URI faculty from various disciplines across campus who support applicants throughout the PATH process.
HPAC members review applicant materials, participate in interviews, and provide constructive feedback about overall readiness for professional school.
The committee’s role is developmental rather than gatekeeping. HPAC helps students:
- Reflect on their preparation
- Practice interviewing
- Identify strengths and areas for growth
- Develop a competitive application strategy

Letter Packet Process
Beginning with the 2027 application cycle (students applying in 2027 for enrollment in 2028), PATH participants will receive a Letter Packet rather than an evaluative committee letter.
A Letter Packet includes:
- A non-evaluative cover letter from the URI Pre-Health Career Pathways
- Individual letters of recommendation submitted on the student’s behalf
The Letter Packet allows professional schools to receive all recommendation letters in a single packet while preserving the voices of each individual recommender.
PATH is available to current URI undergraduate students and URI alumni who graduated within the past three years
PA applicants are supported through individual advising appointments. Because most physician assistant programs require letters to be submitted directly through CASPA, PATH Letter Packets are not provided for PA applicants.
When should I apply?
One of the most important decisions in the application process is determining when to apply.
While some students apply during their junior year, many applicants become more competitive by applying during their senior year or after graduation.
Applying later is often not a setback: it is a strategic decision that allows applicants to strengthen their academic preparation, clinical experiences, leadership, service, research, and overall readiness.
