Are you ready to talk with Pre-Health Career Pathways?
URI Pre-Health Career Pathways is here to support students preparing for careers in healthcare. We welcome students of all class years, majors, and stages of the pre-health journey.
Before scheduling an advising appointment, we encourage you to take advantage of the many resources available to you. Most common questions can be answered through our website, Brightspace resource page (Pre-Health Connect), workshops, newsletter, and Pre-Health Peer Advisors.
These resources are designed to help you navigate the pre-health pathway, learn about opportunities, and find answers quickly without having to wait for an appointment.
Start Here
We recommend completing the following steps before scheduling an appointment:
- Review the resources available that are available here on our website! We did our best to design our website to answer the questions Pre-Health students often have.
- Read our Pre-Health 101 module, which reviews what it means to be a Pre-Health student here at URI and answers to most common questions.
- Explore the materials, guides, and announcements posted in our Brightspace resource page, Pre-Health Connect. Don’t have access? Make sure to fill out our short Handshake survey to join the Pre-Health community.
- Attend a Pre-Health 101 Information Session (or review the recording) to learn about common topics, timelines, and prerequisite planning.
- Subscribe to our newsletter to stay informed about upcoming events, opportunities, and important updates.
- Drop-in to chat with a Pre-Health Peer Advisor for guidance on common questions.
Meet with a Pre-Health Peer Advisor (PHPA’s)
Pre-Health Peer Advisors are often the best first stop for questions about:
- Course planning and scheduling
- Getting started with direct patient care/clinical experience
- Volunteer opportunities
- Shadowing
- Campus involvement and student organizations
- General questions about the pre-health student experience
Peer Advisors can help you identify resources and next steps and may answer many questions without the need for an advising appointment.
When to Schedule an Appointment
If you’ve reviewed the available resources and still have questions, a Pre-Health Career Pathways advising appointment may be helpful.
Common topics for advising appointments include:
- Exploring healthcare careers and evaluating potential pathways
- Developing a long-term pre-health preparation plan
- Discussing competitiveness and experiences in the context of professional school applications
- Reflecting on your goals and identifying areas for growth
- Preparing for the application process, including personal statements and interviews
Before your appointment, think about what you’d like to discuss and include as much detail as possible when completing your appointment request. This helps ensure we can make the best use of our time together.
Appointments
Appointments are scheduled through Handshake. When making an appointment, please provide a brief description of your questions and indicate what resources you have already reviewed. This allows us to focus the conversation on your specific needs rather than information that may already be available through existing resources.
We look forward to supporting you throughout your pre-health journey and encourage you to make full use of the website, Brightspace, workshops, newsletter, and Pre-Health Peer Advisors as you get started.
