Building Your Medical School List by Program Fit

Students and alumni that are applying each cycle often ask: how many schools or programs should I apply to? While there are national averages, we suggest that students consider how they are the best fit for each program they are applying to. How does your experiences match their goals and their overall mission?

While we often suggest using the Medical School Admission Requirements™ (MSAR®), or AACOM’s Choose DO Explorer, there is a new tool that was recently built (and is completely free!) to use to research programs called Smarter Premed. It was created by a Pre-Med student’s Dad to help them navigate:

  • Schools that have an in-state preference for applicants
  • A category system to identify what the programs focus on: med schools cluster by how they train, who they select, and what they value in applicants. They’ve grouped all 160 programs so you can find the ones that match how you think about yourself.
