Community Engagement Opportunities for Pre-Health Students

How to Choose Where to Get Involved

Looking for meaningful experiences outside of URI? Start by thinking about the populations and issues you care about most. Whether you’re passionate about mental health, emergency response, health equity, advocacy, aging populations, reproductive health, or crisis intervention, the best opportunity is the one you’ll genuinely enjoy showing up for every week.

Health professions programs are not looking for one specific volunteer experience. They want to see that you’ve committed your time to something meaningful, developed relationships, learned from the people you serve, and can reflect on how the experience shaped your understanding of healthcare. Focus less on “what looks good” and more on where you can make a meaningful contribution and sustain your involvement over time.

Advice for Pre-Health Students

Instead of asking:“What volunteer experience will get me into medical school?”

Ask:

โœ… “What issue do I genuinely care about?”

โœ… “What population do I want to serve?”

โœ… “Where can I picture myself showing up consistently?”

Students who volunteer because they are passionate about a cause often gain more meaningful experiences, stronger stories, greater leadership opportunities, and deeper personal growth than students who choose activities solely because they think admissions committees will be impressed. The best experience is the one that helps you grow while making a positive impact on others.
