Resume Sample: Engineering

Format

An effective resume for engineering majors should be a simple one-column format with no graphic elements (no textboxes, photos, icons, etc.). The page is balanced and full, but not crowded, and sections are labeled clearly and organized logically (from most important to less important). For STEM majors, Technical Skills (such as programming languages, computer-aided design and drafting, prototyping, etc.), should be featured near the top of the resume (that section can be placed under the Education and Relevant Coursework sections).

Content

This resume example is written for a student who has had an internship or relevant job in their field. If you have not yet had an internship or relevant job, move your Projects section up, immediately following the Technical Skills section.

Engineering resumes should feature:

  • Official degree name(s) and minor(s)
  • Relevant Coursework (optional, but good for students to show what you are learning)
  • Technical skills (related to programming languages, computer-aided design and drafting (CAD), prototyping, computational and simulation software (MATLAB), etc.)
  • Certifications (if applicable)
  • Professional experience (related to your major and career goals)
  • Projects completed in classes, at jobs, or on your own (to illustrate hands-on application of skills and knowledge) – include your capstone project!
  • Section(s) to showcase your professional/soft skills such as Leadership, Activities or Campus Involvement, Volunteer Experience
  • Part-time or non-STEM work experience (to illustrate skills in communication, teamwork, time management, problem solving, critical thinking, work ethic, etc.)

If you were just in high school 1-2 years ago, you may also include more high school experiences on your resume. Feature your more recent experience first within each section (reverse chronological order).

Each experience has 2-5 bullet points that describe the major accomplishments and contributions you made in that role (start bullet point statements with action verbs) – what were your main responsibilities, how did you positively impact the organization, and what skills did you develop as a result of this position? Make sure that you are emphasizing connections between this role and the position(s) you are now applying for.
